I'm Ashley - a New Jersey Wedding Photographer living on the shore with my hubby and daughters, Elin & Hazel.

meet ashley - your wedding day bff.

A Wave Resort wedding in Long Branch, NJ gives you an oceanfront balcony ceremony, a beach that is right there (no shuttle, no travel time), and a sleek modern ballroom that does not fight your color palette. Cynthia and Noah got married there on June 6, 2026, in white, baby blue, and more hydrangeas than I could count. In the end, it was exactly the sleek beachy summer day they had been describing to me for a year.

What you might not see in a slideshow is how much of this day was quietly, deliberately built by two people who knew exactly what they wanted and skipped everything they did not care about. No planner. No videographer. No cake moment. No bouquet toss. Instead: Cynthia’s brother in the officiant spot, ZBiotics at every place setting, and a first dance to a Lane 8 track. A truly personalized event!

How Cynthia and Noah Met (Bumble, a Train, and About Eighteen Months of Amtrak)

They matched on Bumble in July 2022. At the time, Noah was in from Boston for a fundraiser for KEEN, the nonprofit he got involved with while finishing his physics PhD at Columbia. They squeezed in a first date right before he had to get back on the train. It was a great first date, but there was one small wrinkle: he was moving to Washington, DC in October.

So Noah started inventing reasons to be in New York. First he was “stopping by” after apartment hunting in DC. Then he was “stopping by” after seeing friends in Philly. Soon the weekend visits stretched into five day visits. In September, Cynthia (an MIT grad who had been working in finance in the city since 2017, and who travels constantly for work) had a conference in Boston, and that is where they officially defined the relationship. Of course, both of them will tell you they knew after the first date anyway.

They did long distance until December 2023, when Noah’s job finally let him move to New York. He moved in right away, and the following September he moved into finance himself. With that, the Amtrak era was officially over.

Why They Chose Wave Resort in Long Branch

Cynthia grew up in Short Hills and spent every summer in Mantoloking. That stretch of the shore is the place that formed her, and eventually it became the place that belonged to both of them. Since then, her parents have moved to Toronto for her dad’s job and her brother now lives in San Francisco, so the Short Hills house is gone. The Mantoloking house, however, is not. That is the anchor.

From there the venue search was simple math. They wanted the sleekest, most modern venue closest to Mantoloking, and Wave Resort won. Similarly, the date was chosen for the least complicated reason in wedding planning history: they wanted a summer wedding.

Here is why Wave Resort works so well for the modern beach look, from a photographer’s side of the lens. First, the balcony ceremony space on the sixth floor puts the Atlantic directly behind you. Also, the light off the water in early June is soft and generous. Finally, the High Crest Ballroom is clean and contemporary instead of gold-and-burgundy hotel ballroom. When your palette is white with pops of blue, that matters enormously, because nothing in the room is arguing with your flowers.

The Details: White, Baby Blue, and a lot of Hydrangea!

Cynthia’s inspiration was, in her own words, “modern beach wedding” on Pinterest. But the flowers came from somewhere more personal than a search bar. Every house in Mantoloking is lined with hydrangeas. Because that is the flower of her summers, Narcissus Florals built the day around them.

Everything else stayed white with small pops of blue. For example, the bridesmaids wore light blue (three solid and three floral, because they picked their own and it worked beautifully). Cynthia’s mom also wore blue, and the white signage carried blue lettering throughout. Meanwhile, the invitation suite went dusty blue and tan.

That signage, by the way, was made by Cynthia. In Canva. She is deeply type A, planned this entire wedding without a planner, and then designed her own invitations and signs too. She will tell you that is the extent of the DIY. Still, I would argue that is a full second job.

The Dress: A Canadian Designer, Found at the Jersey Shore

The dress story is my favorite kind. While visiting Canada, Cynthia and her mom went dress shopping purely for fun, with no pressure. Months later, on an actual dedicated dress shopping day, she found one at Lovely Bride in NYC that she loved, but the fit was not quite right. As it turned out, it was almost identical to something she had tried on in Canada. That dress was the Wisteria by Truvelle, a Canadian designer, and Abigail Bride in Asbury Park happened to carry the line. In the end, she wore the sleeveless version. Sometimes the shore just hands you the answer.

She paired it with white Nomasei sandals and rings from Lauren B. Noah, meanwhile, wore a light blue Suitsupply suit that photographed like it was designed for this exact building. Later, around 8pm, Cynthia changed into an ivory STAUD Le Sable dress for the rest of the night. That is the kind of second-look moment I always encourage and rarely get to shoot.

The Day Itself: A First Look, Beach Portraits, and a Balcony Ceremony

Since both of them got ready at the Wave, there was zero travel time and a schedule that actually breathed. We started with a first look on the balcony, then moved to portraits on the beach. After that, we did family formals on the sand before the ceremony so that everyone could go straight from “I do” into cocktail hour. If you are planning a Wave Resort wedding and you take one logistical note from this post, take that one.

The ceremony ran 4:30 to 5:00 on the balcony. Cynthia’s brother Steven officiated with the rings in his pocket (no ring bearer, no flower girl, no ceremony choreography they did not want). They also wrote their own vows. Standing six floors above the ocean, reading words you wrote yourself, to a person who used to fake business trips to see you: that is the shot.

The High Crest Ballroom Reception, From ZBiotics to the Last Song

After cocktail hour from 5:00 to 6:00, the High Crest Ballroom took over until 11:00. There were four speeches, from two co-maids of honor, the best man, and the father of the bride. Then came a father-daughter dance and a mother-son dance, with Elite Entertainment on music. Their first dance was “I Will Leave A Light On” by Lane 8, which is a beautiful choice and also a nice signal that this crowd was not messing around on the dance floor.

The single best detail of the night, though, was a ZBiotics for every guest. Cynthia thought about her guests’ Sunday mornings. Nobody does that.

As for dessert, the situation is very on brand. Cynthia does not really like dessert (she is a fries and salty snacks person), so the cake was simply the Chocolate Carousel option included with the Wave package. There was no cake cutting, and everyone moved on. I love a couple who spends their energy only where they actually care.

What Made This Wave Resort Wedding Work

From the outside it looks effortless, and yet effortless is always the result of decisions. Here are theirs:

The couple picked a venue that already looked like their Pinterest board instead of one they would have to decorate into submission. Next, they used one flower and used a lot of it. Two colors were plenty for the palette. Every tradition they did not personally care about got cut, which bought back real time. Above all, they built the whole day in one building, which is the quietest luxury at a Jersey Shore wedding in June.

After the wedding, they are off to Singapore, Bali, and Lombok, including Bawah Reserve, a private eco-island they have been dreaming about for years.

Cynthia and Noah, thank you for trusting me with this one. Four years after a first date squeezed in before a train back to Boston, you said “I do” on the stretch of coast that made you, in front of the people who love you. From the balcony to the last song, it was a joy.

Wave Resort Wedding FAQs

Where is Wave Resort and what is the wedding venue like?

Wave Resort is an oceanfront hotel at 110 Ocean Avenue in Long Branch, New Jersey, in Monmouth County. Weddings there typically use the sixth floor balcony for ceremonies, the beach for portraits, and the High Crest Ballroom for the reception. The design is modern and neutral, which suits contemporary and minimal color palettes.

Can you have a beach ceremony at Wave Resort?

Cynthia and Noah held their ceremony on the Wave balcony overlooking the ocean rather than on the sand, and used the beach for their first look, couple portraits, and family formals. The balcony gives you the ocean backdrop with reliable footing, no wind issues with hair and veils, and easy guest seating.

How much time do you need for photos at Wave Resort?

Because getting ready, the ceremony, and the reception all happen in the same building, there is no travel time to budget. Cynthia and Noah did a first look, couple portraits, and 30 minutes of family formals on the beach before their 4:30pm ceremony, which meant they could attend their entire cocktail hour.

What is the best time of year for a Wave Resort wedding?

Late spring through early fall gives you warm sand and long light. Early June, when this wedding took place, delivers soft late afternoon light off the water and hydrangeas in season locally, which is worth knowing if you want shore flowers.

Do you photograph weddings in Long Branch and along the Jersey Shore?
