Italy Honeymoon with Destination Wedding Photographer

Blogging about our amazing honeymoon in Italy is making me so happy! We had an amazing trip last August to celebrate getting married and it was the trip of a lifetime for sure! We love to travel together and always wanted to go to Italy and knew we had to save this trip for our honeymoon. We got to explore so many places in Italy that we had only dreamed of seeing and felt so lucky. Lou and I had an incredible time and we hope some of our experiences help you plan a great trip to Italy, too! A huge shout out to my friend and our travel planner, Mallory Weiss Planning for helping us create such a wonderful itinerary!

Florence

After a long flight and train ride from Rome to Florence. we were ready to eat, drink and explore the city! While we were there, we actually wound up watching the Medicis series on Netflix, which was awesome because it was all about the history of Florence. While we were there, we did all of the touristy stuff. We went to the Ponte Vecchio bridge where they sell tons of amazing gold jewelry and had beautiful views. We saw the infamous David statue, the Duomo, thousand year old churches, shopping markets and the Medici castles, chapels and crpyts (how could we miss that after watching the show?).

One of our favorite meals was the blueberry steak from Acqua Al 2, and we found a bakery, called Starbene Senza Glutine, down the street from our hotel with a TON of amazing gluten free goodies. They even had gluten free crescents which I’ve never had before and they were SO good. La Gisotra was another one of our favorite restaurants where they just kept sending food and prosecco out because we were celebrating our honeymoon! How amazing is that!

Tuscany

While we were in Florence, we also did a wine tour over in Tuscany. We went to 2 Chianti vineyards for a tour and tasting (my new favorite wine) and explored a downtown where we had our favorite margarita pizza. I mean we didn’t have a bad meal while we there but this was by far our favorite pizza we had on the trip. The wine was so good and you can’t even begin to believe how incredible the views were! Ever seen the movie, Under the Tuscan Sun, yup, it was just like that!

Rome

I thought we walked a lot in Florence, nope! We walked a ton in Rome but there was a lot more ground to cover, so we did take a few cabs here and there. Walking the streets of Rome is the best way to see the city. There are so many historical places, church and ruins to see so by foot is definitely the way to go. We saw the Colosseum (on the first Sunday of the month admission is free!), the Pantheon and the Vatican (I think our favorite place to see). After years of Catholic school for both Lou and I, seeing so much of what learned in person was amazing. I did get a photo in the Sistine Chapel and got angrily tapped on the shoulder by a guard because I was not aware that it is not permitted. Oops!

Our favorite area of Rome was Traverse. It is located south of Vatican City and we went a few times for dinner, and of course, gelato! The cobble stone streets were filled with life- restaurants, bars, shops, people dancing and creating art. Such an incredible area to be in. As we waited for our table at Grazia y Graziella, we sipped on prosecco and people watched all around us! We also found a tiny little gelato shop that happen to serve gluten free waffle cones topped with pistachio and hazelnut gelato. I still dream about it. I was shockingly surprised with how gluten free friendly Italy was, especially in Florence and Rome.

Our trip took place in the heart of the summer so it was definitely hot but good thing Italy has some amazing drinks to cool down with – I highly recommend an Aperol spritz and Apertivo! Although food everywhere is pretty good, it’s also really easy to get stuck in a few tourist traps.  To be honest though, even the food there was pretty good!

Positano & Capri

After a week or so of exploring, eating, sweating most of the day and seeing as many touristy spots as we could in Rome and Florence, we were ready for a few days of relaxation. We spent the last 5 days of our trip in Positano on the Amalfi Coast, which was definitely our favorite part of the trip. I’ve dreamed about seeing the infamous Amalfi Coast view with all the colorful buildings along the hilll top.

We took a boat to the island of Capri which was filled with all of the most exclusive shops and infamous Blue Lagoon. As we were squeezed into a tiny boat with our italian singing rower, the blue lagoon was terrifying to get in and out of but absolutely beautiful. I did not have any idea of what to expect but I did not know the hole to get into the lagoon is so small! Everyone had to lie down inside the row boat with the rower laying on top of me as he pulled the boat in as the tide went in and out.

Positano is not a big as Rome and Florence but boy, does it have hills!! All the streets are one way so unless you are an impeccable driver or from the area, I suggest not taking a car there. Just save yourself the stress because walking the streets to see the shops, restaurants and views is worth the workout up the hills. We went to the beach, sat poolside on the cliffside with the most amazing view in Positano and enjoyed relaxing the “art of doing nothing” (yes, from the movie Eat Pray Love).

We went to La Tagliatelle restaurant, which was a short shuttle ride to the top of the cliffside. This restaurant was a bit different! There was no menu! They just serve you whats fresh that night. Trust me, it’s more than enough food and the views are impeccable. We had tons of pizza, pasta, wine, and of course my new favorite drink- aperol spritz! Thankfully Italy was very gluten- free friendly but I did indulge a little here and there! I mean, it’s Italy of course I’m going to have a good old fashioned Margherita pizza and homemade pasta! And it was so worth it!

Our favorite part of Positano, besides the beach of course, was the cooking class we took. We cooked in the actual restaurant with this little Italian woman chef and we made everything from scratch! We made raviolis, fish, fettuccini, gluten free almond cookies and my favorite, ricotta stuffed zucchini flowers. Luckily we got to drink wine while we cooked which made it even better.

Our favorite part of Positano (besides the beach, duh!) was the cooking class we took at Ristorante il Ritrovo! We cooked in the actual restaurant with this sweet little Italian woman who owned the restaurant and her nephew. We made everything from scratch during the class, it was amazing!! We made raviolis, fish, fettuccini, gluten free almond cookies and my favorite, ricotta stuffed zucchini flowers. It was so much fun and we learned a ton!

Our trip was truly amazing and I know both of us would love to go back, especially to Positano! Maybe we’ll head back for our 5 or 10 year anniversary….
